Six new books in 2008

Banja Luka, 29th of December 2008 - Eda prepared and published six new books during 2008. During the first half of the year we published policy study: “it is good to build well – Corrections or Remodeling – analysis of policy options for local self-government development in BiH”, as well as a collection of case studies describing the best local leadership practices on the Balkans “it is good to lead well – Primer of good leadership – researchers’ and journalists’ stories”. During the second half of the year we published two comparative studies: “it is good to grow well – In my street – experiences of local economic development” and “it is good to cooperate well – Hand to hand – experiences of local self-government development”, as well as two studies aimed to support youth self-employment: “Youth (Self)Employment – between declarative and real support” and “Youth Self-employment – in search for effective public policy”. As agreed with Open Society Fund BiH and Open Society Institute Budapest two books (“Corrections or Remodeling” and “Primer of good leadership”) will be translated and published in English as well. A book of practical advises for local leaders is in preparation. It will be published till the end of January 2009 as introduction in our new project: Creation of interactive learning center for local leaders.

Press conference regarding policy proposal for support of youth self-employment

Banja Luka, 26th of December 2008 – Development agency Eda held a press conference on the topic “How to stimulate youth self-employment?” in the International press conference in Banjaluka, when publication Youth self-employment – in the quest for the right policy was presented. Mišel Pavlica, manager of the project „FIRST-RIGHT CHANCE - the first for the youth, the right for the governments’” and coauthor of the publication Youth self-employment – in the quest for the right policy, Srdan Mazalica, representative in the Assembley of the Republika Srpska and Žarko Malinovic, secretary general of the Youth Council of the Republika Srpska have spoken about available policy options for support of youth self-employment. Participants presented available policy options for support to youth self-employment, as well as the chosen policy option that includes harmonized financial and non-financial assistance. It was emphasized that the policy can provide desired effects, in terms of youth self-employment, with acceptable costs.

Hand to hand – it is good to cooperate well

Banja Luka, 22nd of December 2008 – Third regional meeting within the framework of the project „Regional support in realizing Local Self-governance development strategy in B&H“ was held in hotel Talija in Banja Luka. The project is realized within East East – Partnership Beyond Borders Programme (Open Society Fund) under the auspices of Development Agency Eda Banja Luka and PALGO Centre Belgrade. The publication “Hand to hand – it is good to cooperate well (experiences in local self-governance development)” was presented at the meeting, as final result of the project. The publication has five separate case studies from region focused on challenges and problems within reorganization of communal model of previous organization of local self-governance units, after break down of former Yugoslavia. The future activities and cooperation within the regional group of experts on local self-governance development were also discussed. The meeting was attended by authors of publication, representatives from the Development agency Eda and representatives from organizations PALGO Centre and URC (Urban Rural Consulting) from Belgrade.

Quality standard ISO 9001:2000 successfully implemented

Banja Luka, 21st of December 2008 – Within realization of the project “Improvement of the Quality System in SMEs” implemented by Eda, the process of preparation has been completed and the company Telegroup from Banjaluka has been certified in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000. Process of preparation for certification has been conducted by Eda consultants in cooperation with management and employees of the Telegroup company and after that certification has been done by accredited certifying house Quality Austria-OQS. Through improving quality of the business in order to maximize their customers’ satisfaction Telegroup gets an opportunity for expanding their operations in the new markets. This is another example of successful cooperation between Eda’s consultants and companies developing their business, in preparation for certification of the quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001:2000 requirements.

Contract for realisation of the project „Prvi stan“ signed

Sarajevo, 19th of December 2008 – Representatives of Centres for Civic Initiatives and Development Agency Eda signed a contract on realization of the project “Prvi stan” (The first apartment) which deals with the housing problems that the young face with. Partner on the project is INEA from Tuzla, and it is also foreseen to establish partnership with relevant stakeholders that are actively involved in solving problems that the young face with and that can contribute to the realization of the goal to include preparation and implementation of effective support instruments aimed at overcoming housing problems of the young in the plans of key institutions / decision makers. Effectiveness of this approach should be reflected through simultaneous increase of availability of funds under favorable conditions and decrease of prices of apartments for the young in B&H. Project should contribute to establishment of institutional solutions aimed at effective support to solving of housing problems that the young in B&H are facing with.

Analysis of youth self-employment policy options

Banja Luka, 15th December 2008 – As a part of the Project „FIRST-RIGHT CHANCE - the first for the youth, the right for the governments”, analysis of youth self-employment policy options named „Youth self-employment – in quest for the right policy“ was prepared. This publication is a result of work of partnership – coalition group composed of representatives of Republika Srpska authorities, representatives of youth organizations and Eda project team. Status quo option, option of more efficient financial assistance and a harmonised financial and non-financial assistance option have been considered as possible policy options. It was concluded that only option with harmonised financial and non-financial assistance can result with desired effects in terms of youth self-employment and, accordingly, the establishing of a specific restricted fund for youth was proposed. In the next phase of the project, the selected option of harmonised financial and non-financial assistance will be developed into particular support instrument – restricted fund for youth with appropriate mechanisms of their qualification for self-employment.

Publication on experiences in local economic development in Serbia, Macedonia, Croatia and B&H

Banja Luka, 8th December 2008 – As part of the FIELD project - Framework for Inclusive and Effective Local Development in B&H, implemented by Eda with the support from Open Society Fund in B&H, a study named „It is good to grow well in my street – local economic development experiences“ was published. This comparative case study presents a number of practices and solutions in the field of local economic development and their effects in B&H and nearby countries. The study is here to improve orientation for all those facing economic development challenges not only at local, but also higher levels. The team of authors consists of: Dušan Vasiljević - Serbia, Gligor Stojkov - Macedonia, Jakša Puljiz - Croatia and Mišel Pavlica - B&H.
